5 Myths and Facts You Must Know about Fertility

    • 4.8   (5 Votes)

Myths and Facts you must know about fertility are crucial in planning for pregnancy. Myths and facts about fertility need to be known include smoking needs to be stopped as soon as you plan for pregnancy and having sex will help you get pregnant without opting for IVF treatment.

Just because you eat organic or you are vegan and exercise a lot does not mean that you cannot be infertile! Here are some common myths people believe and now need to be busted:

When it comes to fertility and conception and trying to conceive, there are so many rumors that people believe in and which have been doing the rounds for decades around us. Just because of these rumors that make couples refuse to seek medical help even after they have been trying to have a baby for years.

Myth 1. Male fertility and unlike female fertility is not finite:

Men have the power to produce sperms till 80 years or even beyond, so it’s the women who are the culprits and need fertility treatment, not men ever. While it is the lesser known fact that men produce sperms till 80 years of age or even beyond, but everyone should know that all men might not have good sperm count or healthy sperm that is fit for the conception. Age, lifestyle, and stress or other factors like smoking and drinking or drugs can affect a man’s fertility and make him infertile or may cause male infertility. It is seen in most cases that men trying for a 2nd or 3rd child might face infertility problems like oligospermia (deficiency of sperms in semen) or azoospermia (absence of mobile or viable sperms in the semen that is needed for egg fertilization). Fertility, Ovulation, Male Infertility

Heavy usage of Wi-Fi or internet all the time, usage of electronic gadgets, and big dependency on junk food and lots of consumption of alcohol can lead to a decline in sperm quality. Even with the long-time supply of sperms, there are chances that men too can suffer from male infertility problems.

#Myth2. Late pregnancy is easier if your menstruation cycle has been regular:

It is the true fact that you run in your fertile period till you menstruate, but every woman should remember that the health and quality of your egg have no relation with your periods and regular cycle. The quality of the eggs that need to be fertilized start declining post 25 years of age, and when you try to conceive after 30 years of age, you are at slightly greater risk of passing chromosomal abnormalities to the fetus that is bad for your baby's health. So as early as you plan your pregnancy the better the results will be. While you will be menstruating till 40, it doesn’t always imply that you will have healthy eggs until that age that can make conception easier for you. (2)

#Myth 3.Smoking has no ill-effects while conceiving but you should stop once you get pregnant:

Remember that you have to create a safe place for your child to grow and develop in your womb. Stop smoking once you start planning for the baby, even it is strictly advisable to stop smoking at least six months before conception or trying to conceive. This is not only very important for women, but for the men too. This is because smoking declines the sperm count and deteriorates sperm health. (3)

#Myth 4. Having sex within 24 hours of ovulation period can increase the chances of pregnancy:

Firstly, you need to track your ovulation period, which depends on your menstrual cycle and some days of your periods. But if you are successful in tracking your ovulation period, then never wait for 24 hours to pass before having sex. All women need to remember that the lifespan of the eggs is just 24-36 hours and needs to be fertilized and that of the sperm is as long as up to 5 days, so the as soon as you have sex after ovulation, the better get the chances to conceive. Fertility Myths and Facts, Male Infertility, Ovulation

In fact, it is highly advisable to have intercourse a day before ovulation and especially during the day of ovulation to improve your chances of conception and getting pregnant. The sperm needs to meet the egg to fertilize it. Once it is released from the ovary and before it enters the fallopian tube.

#Myth 5. Having intercourse every night can help you make a baby without going through IVF treatments:

Going with this myth, childless couples who are trying for kids could give birth to the babies by the dozen in the number. There could be a number of problems in both the man and the woman that can be the hurdle in the way of conception or getting pregnant. A woman might be suffering from the conditions like PCOS or PCOD, obesity or have both blocked fallopian tube that can make it very difficult for her to conceive and get pregnant. Here, the man might suffer from male infertility conditions like oligospermia or azoospermia that can simply reduce the couple’s chance of conception. (5)
