Top 7 ways to predict and monitor Ovulation and Menstrual Periods

    • 4.7   (6 Votes)

Ovulation is a phase in which eggs are released from ovaries in women. Ovulation can be predicted with the help of ovulation predictor kit and ovulation app where you can record cervical mucus changes and BBT. A woman can also track her ovulation by calculating it from the last date of her menstrual cycle.

Ovulation is the process in which a mature egg is released by one of the ovaries around the mid-cycle of a woman. If this mature egg finds sperm then fertilization of the egg takes place. Pregnancy is attained once this egg or ovum is fertilized and implanted. Hence ovulation prediction is the most important step in order to get pregnant naturally. There are a lot of women who dream of conceiving naturally. (1) Getting pregnant can be an emotionally tiring experience that can take long without any definite reason. A number of women remain clueless about the importance and benefits of tracking ovulation while the rest of them wonder about the ways with which it can be effectively tracked. This article will explain to you various methods using which you can trace down the ovulation day more accurately and decide upon the days of intercourse, in accordance to it, to maximize the chances of falling pregnant. (2)

There are several methods used for predicting the ovulation. The popular method for determining the ovulation is by observing your body and learning to spot the signals of ovulation. Your body will provide you accurate indications of ovulation. So, it is extremely essential for a woman who is trying to conceive to understand how our body functions and changes around ovulation.

You can also use the below-mentioned methods for tracking ovulation:

    1. Tracking Menstrual Periods

Keeping a track of your menstrual cycle is the base of the rhythm method. Ovulation generally happens during the middle of the menstrual cycle. The first day of your menstrual cycle is a day when bleeding begins and the cycle ends a day before when the bleeding starts again i.e. the first day of your next cycle. Though, the average length of the menstrual cycle is 28 days where ovulation most likely occurs on the 14th cycle day. Normal cycles range from 21 to 35 days, which makes predicting ovulation a bit difficult. By using ovulation calendar you can easily figure out when does your ovulation occur. (3)

This method may not work for you if your cycles are irregular. In such a situation, you can use the online menstrual tracker.

    2. Change in Cervical Mucus

It is considered as one of the best methods of predicting ovulation due to lesser efforts and time that goes into it.  You will notice an increase in the cervical mucus volume as you closely proceed to ovulation. The increase in volume and changes in texture describes the body’s rising levels of estrogen. A woman is considered to be the most fertile when the cervical mucus becomes clear, slippery and stretchy. You will find cervical mucus like raw egg white near your ovulation. You will be ovulating at this stage so consider having unprotected intercourse with your partner if you want to get pregnant. (4)

So, keep checking your cervical mucus during your fertile period, as it will give you an indication of when you will ovulate.

    3. Increase in Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

After ovulation, the temperature of women body elevates by 0.5 to 1.6 degrees Celsius. It is hard to feel the shift but it can be detected by using the Basal Body Temperature (BBT) thermometer. Your BBT is the first reading you need to take when you wake up in the morning before getting out of the bed or indulging in any physical activity. BBT is the lowest before ovulation and then rises suddenly for about half a degree on ovulation day. So, tracking BBT will help you to know when ovulation has already occurred. And if you are monitoring your BBT for a few months then you will be able to tell the pattern of when do you ovulate. Thus, it will help you in determining the most fertile days in your cycle. (5)

The pattern may get disrupted if you have cold or an infection.

    4. Ovulation Predictor Kits

How do you track your fertile phase? The other best method is using ovulation prediction kits. These over-the-counter kits help in measuring the luteinizing hormone (LH) level. This hormone reaches its peak during ovulation. Ovulation predictor kits are highly popular and can be used at home, allowing you to know when you will be ovulating. These kits pinpoint the ovulation day at least 12 to 36 hours before. These small strips detect the presence of LH. The strips are dipped in the early morning sample of urine. It is advised to use the strips from the 10th day of your cycle till 15th to 16th day. (6)

If the test line is darker than the control line, it implies the surge in the LH and you are about to ovulate in the next 24 to 48 hours. So, having intercourse during this fertile window will increase the chances of pregnancy.

You can also use fertility tracker for ascertaining the ovulation.

    5. Lower Abdominal Discomfort

About one-fifth of women feel brief, slight pain or series of cramps in their lower abdomen when they are ovulating. It usually occurs on the side from where ovary has released an egg and uterine lining prepares itself to receive the fertilized egg. Not everyone notices this signal as the pain is quite mild and may go unnoticed by many. If you still feel the cramps during your mid-menstrual cycle then it is the best time for trying to get pregnant. (7)

    6. Use Ovulation App

You can use digital mode of ovulation tracker i.e. by using an app. ELA app can be used for tracking the information during monthly cycles. You need to update your daily health log in this app such as basal body temperature, menstrual cycle dates, vaginal discharge, cervical position, etc. According to the data provided, the app determines the date of ovulation. You can also record your sexual activity. The app also provides you with charts and graphs along with the data, which is useful for those who are tracking their ovulation. (8)

    7. Cervix Position

Observing the changes in the position of the cervix can also help in tracking ovulation. As the menstrual cycle begins and proceeds further, there are noticeable changes seen in the position and texture of the cervix that can be easily gauged just by feeling it with fingers. The cervix is the opening of the uterus that can be felt within vagina.

    • Cervix appears to be soft, high, open and wet when close to ovulation.
    • After ovulation, these signs change right opposite to the ones during ovulation and the cervix seems to be dry, firm, low and closed. If you find it like this then you have ovulated already. (9) (10)

Easier said than done, many women may find it difficult because they have not done it before and may not even tell what a soft cervix feels like. This method, when combined with other signs like changes in cervical mucus, can turn out more accurate.

So, these are the most effective and trusted ways practiced through the years by many women around the world for tracking down their ovulation. You may use one or more in combination to determine your ovulation day effectively.

You can also use ELA app for tracking your menstrual cycles and can prepare yourself to start your journey of pregnancy.
