    Ovulation and pregnancy test are closely associated with each other. A couple can either prepare of avoid pregnancy with the assistance of ovulation cycle. Symptoms of ovulation are change in sexual drive, BBT and cervical mucus, cramps with abdominal bloating. Fertility days are also calculated based on ovulation cycle.

    Ovulation & Ovulation Cycle - An Overview

    Ovulation is the biological process in females where one of her ovaries releases a mature egg/oocyte through the fallopian tube. Normally ovulation occurs once in every month in women with twice or multiple times to some women due to some hormonal imbalances. Ovulation is the most important event for pregnancy to occur naturally. It is caused by the surge of various hormones in her body which are released by her pituitary glands in the brain. (1) (2) 

    How to calculate when I am ovulating?

    Normally ovulation occurs in 11-21 days of the first day of your last menstrual period. However, it varies from women to women depending on their physical health and medical conditions. Therefore, it is always better to go for a combination method of calculating ovulation. (3)

    These combinations method includes tracking your Basal Body Temperature daily, tracking cervical mucus status and period tracking along with using Ovulation Predictor Kits or tools in between 11-21 LMP (Last Menstrual Period).

    What Are Signs and Symptoms of Ovulation?

    There are many signs and symptoms of ovulation. However, not all women experience ovulation symptoms. Most women experience some of the many symptoms of ovulation listed below (4)-

    1- Change in Cervical Mucus. Normally women experience egg white cervical mucus (EWCM), transparent and stretchy in color and consistency. Some may experience a little whiter version of this cervical mucus too during ovulation.
    2- Change in sex drive. During ovulation, a woman tends to have increased sex drive.
    3- Mood swings and fatigue.

    5- Spotting/bleeding due to follicle rupture.
    6- Change in Basal Body Temperature. It is maximum during ovulation.
    7- Abdominal bloating and cramps. Twinges to either side of the abdomen can be observed.

    How many days am I fertile?

    After the release, the egg is available for fertilization for 12-24 hours. However, sperm can live inside the body for a maximum of 5 days. Therefore, 4-5 days before ovulation also can be counted as a fertile phase for a woman. (5)

    How many days am I fertile after ovulation?

    Normally ovulation occurs through the release of an ovarian egg, which stays up to 12-24 hours in the fallopian tube. And for sperm, it takes 5-6 hours to reach the egg with the help of cervical mucus. Therefore, within this window, a woman has the chance to get fertilized. Normally it is preferable to release sperm before the fertile window as they can survive for a maximum 5 days inside fallopian tubes. (6)

    Can I ovulate during periods?

    It is almost impossible to ovulate during the menstrual period. The menstrual period is a biological process which is caused by shedding of endometrial linings after 12-15 days of ovulation. Keeping that in mind, a woman cannot ovulate during periods. (7)

    What are signs and symptoms of ovulation
    However, many women experience occasional bleeding due to other reasons such as endometriosis, thyroid, etc. which they confuse with regular periods. Under such circumstances, you can ovulate even with the bleeding on.

    What is the cervical mucus during ovulation?

    Cervical mucus is a fluid secreted by cervix due to stimulation by estrogen hormones. As a woman approaches towards ovulation, estrogen surge in her body escalates which leads to more cervical mucus production as well as secretion. The cervical mucus secreted during this phase is fertile friendly and popularly known as EWCM (Egg White Cervical Mucus) which is transparent and sticky in color and consistency. These EWCM helps sperm flow into the fallopian tube and very much balanced in terms of Ph and texture. (8) (9)
