Know Facts about Sperms - Taking care of Sperm Health, Sperm Count and Quality, Life of Sperms

    • 4.8   (5 Votes)

Sperm health is determined with various factors related to sperms. This includes sperm count, sperm quality, age of the individual. There is a decrease in the sperm count by age in case of most of the men. Life of sperms is around 4-5 days when it is released in the body of the woman at the time of intercourse.

It is a fact that you need at least one healthy sperm and a healthy egg to make a baby. (1) But this is not as simple as it seems. You may be eager to find out how long sperm live? (2) The fact is that sperm takes a lot of time in right from the time it enters your vaginal cavity and travel inside the ovaries to meet an egg and fertilize it. If you are one of those couples who are planning pregnancy then you must know that unprotected sexual intercourse during ovulation optimizes your chance of getting pregnant. Even if you have unprotected vaginal sex during ovulation, it is important to know whether the sperm has survived for fertilization or not along with the knowledge of sperm count necessary for reproduction. (3)

    How Long Sperm Live?

The life of sperm is highly dependent on the conditions under which it is resting. A sperm needs favorable conditions to survive. It cannot survive in dry conditions. So if the semen has fallen on clothes or bedsheets, there are high chances that sperm may die as soon as the semen dries up. Sperm requires moisture and wet conditions to survive. (4) Sperms may survive for a longer duration in water or hot tub. There are very few chances that sperm which gets into your vaginal cavity through water can get you pregnant. Sperm can survive for 4- 5 days inside your body if you have unprotected sexual intercourse. You must have unprotected vaginal intercourse at least 4 or 5 days before ovulation if you are planning to get pregnant. (5) It increases your chances of getting pregnant as sperms are already available to meet a mature egg to fertilize it. It is a common question that how long sperm live under acidic conditions? It is important for you to know that sperm cannot survive in acidic conditions. So if you are planning pregnancy, you should maintain the PH balance of your vagina. You must also track your ovulation before having sex. After ovulation, your vaginal cavity turns acidic and makes it difficult for the sperms to survive under acidic conditions.

Sperm Count, You Require to Have A Baby

Sperm count is considered healthy when a man releases more than 40 million sperms in one ejaculation. However, some men release nearly 100 million sperms per ejaculation. If your partner releases less than 40 million sperms per ejaculation, then he is considered to have a low sperm count. You must check the sperm count before you try to conceive. (6)

Sperm count test can help you in getting pregnant

You may think that what makes it important for your partner to have a higher sperm count when you require only one sperm to get pregnant. This is because all sperms in a single ejaculation compete with each other to reach the egg. They travel a long and complex journey to meet the egg. Ultimately, the healthiest sperm reaches the egg to fertilize it. Experts reveal that this process is designed naturally to get a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby as well. To know how long sperm lives, you must know that sperm completes this journey within 4-5 days of the ejaculation and the healthiest sperm wins over the egg inside the uterus. (7)

    How To Keep Sperm Healthy?

A sperm count is considered healthy when a man carries at least 40 million sperms per ejaculation in his semen. Your partner should include walnuts, berries, green leafy vegetables, and avocados in your diet to get healthy sperms and a high sperm count. He should quit smoking and should stop drinking alcohol to get a healthy sperm count if you are planning to start your family. (10) Your partner should wear comfortable and airy clothes as an elevated temperature of your testicles may make your sperms unhealthy and may lower down your sperm count. You should also avoid hot baths as it can raise the temperature of your scrotum and can damage healthy sperms. Your partner should avoid direct contact with toxic agents, radiations and harmful chemicals. (8)

Having unprotected sexual intercourse during your most fertile days increases your chances to conceive.

    unprotected sexual intercourse

If you are planning to start your family soon then you should have sexual intercourse at least 4-5 days before your ovulation. Sperm survives for 4-5 days inside your vaginal cavity and can make you pregnant. (9)
