Normal Sperm Count and Motility - Affect of these factors on Pregnancy

    • 4.7   (5 Votes)

Normal sperm count in men is considered in the range of 15 to 200 million. If the sperm count in men is less than 15 million, then infertility treatments are advised. Sperm motility of the progressive type is in the range of 32% - 75%. Normal sperm count and motility is required for positive pregnancy.

Below, we bring you all the necessary details on what is the normal sperm motility for pregnancy and how many sperms does it take to get pregnant. Also, we discuss ways of improving your sperm count for a successful pregnancy.

Sperm and Sperm Count: An Overview

Sperm is a reproductive cell present in a male body. Half of the genetic code in a child is carried by the sperm. Normally they are micro round/oval-shaped living particles with a long sharp tail which flow out along with semen during ejaculation. (1) (2)

Sperm count is basically the quantity of sperm every milliliter of semen. However, you can’t count sperm physically. You will need a Semen Analysis Test or a Sperm Culture Report to determine your sperm count.

What is Normal Sperm Count for Pregnancy?

Normally a count of 40 to 300 million sperms per millilitre of semen is considered healthy for natural pregnancy. In case your sperm count falls less than 20 million, you need to opt for proper treatment along with dietary and lifestyle changes.

However, for a successful pregnancy, you need only one healthy sperm which will fertilize the egg. However, the sperm has a natural tendency to die soon while traveling inside the uterus. For that reason, a healthy sperm count is essential for a natural course of pregnancy to take place. (3)

    Sperm Motility: What is it?

Sperm motility is the percentage of sperm that is moving in a semen sample along with their ability to move. Motility of sperm is as important as the sperm count and sperm morphology. This is due to the reason that vaginal cavities are very acidic and motility of sperm is very necessary to fight it to make it for a successful pregnancy. (4)

What is Normal Sperm Motility for Pregnancy?

Normally Semen Analysis Reports or Sperm Culture Report say that under proper environment at least 32% of the sperm should be moving in the first hour of ejaculation. (5)

    Sperm Morphology

Sperm Morphology is the analysis of size, shape, and appearance of sperm to determine if they are healthy or not. (6)

    How long does Sperm Live?

Sperm can live up to 5 days inside a woman’s body. They carry strong chlorine-like enzymes which help them survive through women’s acidic cavities. Sperm has tendencies to live in a warm and wet environment. In dry places such as on a cloth or a dry floor, they will die automatically the semen dries up. (7)

How to Treat Low Sperm Count & Low Sperm Motility

Just remember, one healthy sperm is the key. You do not need your swimmers to grow more than the normal to increase your chances of conception. The important thing is to improve their morphology, concentration, and motility along with growing them to a normal count. There are a lot of things one can do to improve the sperm count. (8)

    Low Sperm Count

    1. Ejaculate daily - Unused sperm turn oxidized and harm new production. Make sure to ejaculate every day. However, too much ejaculation is not healthy as it can toll on many unhealthy habits along with fatigue. Have sex more often to increase the life of your sperm. (9)

    2. Eat healthily - Eating healthy is the key. The food you eat is directly related to your sperm health. Include lean protein, green veggies along with Omega-3 rich foods more to boost your sperm count.

    3. Exercise regularly The guys who are into sports or regular exercise tend to have more chances in impregnating their women. This is necessary to maintain a good blood flow in the genital chambers where sperm production takes place.

    4. Check the Ph level of your partner - Make it a habit of checking her Ph level. Normally vaginas turn more acidic and hostile towards sperm with more Ph level. Maintaining good balance is healthy for your swimmers. Buy her good vaginal wash with Ph control ingredients and take care of her diet as well.

    5. Visit your Urologist regularly - Make it a habit to visit your urologist regularly. If you find anything wrong with your sperm such as nature, consistency, and color, talk it out with your Urologist. Run some test or don’t hesitate to go for ART (Assisted Reproductive Techniques) treatment such as TESA, MESA, PESA, TESE, etc. for treating your low sperm count.

    6. Quit smoking and drinking - Nicotine and alcohol are two of the greatest enemies of your sperm. They tend to lower sperm growth. Quit them as soon as possible to improve your chances of boosting sperm count. (10)
