Artificial Insemination - Types, Cost, Procedure, Risks, Success Rates

Artificial insemination are available in different types such as IUI, ICI, IUTPI, and ITI. Intrauterine Insemination is one of the most commonly performed procedure among all. Artificial insemination uses are in male, female and unexplained types of infertility. Risks include occurrence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and multiple births.

Let’s Discuss in More About Artificial Insemination and Infertility Treatment:

Now, treating infertility is not a difficult or impossible thing anymore. While consulting the doctor for infertility treatment then they must have suggested you with a technique called 'artificial treatment'. It is a method of treating infertility in which semen is directly inserted into women's cervix, fallopian tubes or in the uterus. And the common method is 'intrauterine insemination (IUI) where sperm is placed in uterus.

This method makes easy for the sperm to penetrate easily without any obstructions. Earlier, this method was limited to livestock but now has been adapted for human use.

Types of infertility treated by Artificial Insemination:

    • Male factor Infertility
    • Unexplained Infertility
    • Female Infertility

This method is useful in treating many types of fertility problems.

    Fertility

If it is regarding male infertility, this technique is used when there is a low sperm count or if it is not strong enough to move through cervix and up into fallopian tubes.

In case of female infertility, this treatment is useful if the woman has a condition called endometriosis, unreceptive cervical mucus (when mucus around cervix doesn't let seminal fluid to get into uterus and fallopian tubes) or anything abnormal with reproductive organs.

What is the process of Artificial Insemination?

There are four types of artificial insemination:

    1- Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

    2- Intracervical insemination (ICI)

    3- Intrauterine tuboperitoneal insemination (IUTPI)

    4- Intratubal insemination (ITI)

    Procedure for Artificial Insemination

1- The physical examination: Both the partners will have to go through the physical exam, which also includes blood testing. The doctor will do sperm analysis where he will take a sperm sample from a male partner. Then he will use this sperm for performing the artificial insemination procedure. The doctor might take few more sperm samples from more than one ejaculation in case of low sperm count.

2- Fertility drugs and then inspection: Before commencing the process, a doctor might prescribe some fertility drugs or any injectable. HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) will also be checked before the procedure for triggering the ovulation.
    Pregnancy
After this injection, the sperm should be inserted with 24-36 hours. You will be monitored through blood tests and ultrasounds to ensure healthy development of eggs.

1- Sperm preparation: Sample goes through special washing and processing process if IUI is performed. It involves

    • The concentration of sperm for increasing chances of pregnancy.
    • Prevention from possible allergic response to sperm.
    • Minimizes uterine cramping.

2- Inserting the sperm: The process is painless and quick. The sperm sample is prepared for insertion and speculum is inserted. Then with the help of a thin catheter and syringe, the sperm is placed in the uterine. While in ICI, sperm is placed in vagina and deposited in cervix with a soft catheter.

3- Rest: A sponge or cervical cap is placed in vagina for keeping the sperm near cervix once the procedure is done. You will be asked to lie down for 15 to 20 minutes, as it is believed that lying down after the process increases the chances of getting pregnant.

    Artificial Insemination -Risks

There are a few risks involved with this infertility treatment procedure:

    • If IUI is taken with fertility combination like gonadotropin then there are chances of multiple births (twins or triplets). Having multiple births can increase complications like miscarriage or premature birth.

    • Fertility medication is also prescribed if endometriosis is the cause of infertility.
    • After taking a combination of IUI and fertility medication, there are chances of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, which is a swelling of women's ovaries. Symptoms are usually mild to moderate but can be serious sometimes.

The process won't work for every couple so in that situation another method is suggested is 'in vitro fertilization' either with your own eggs or with the donor eggs.
