IVF Timeline from Start to Finish - Steps involved in In Vitro Fertilization

    • 4.7   (5 Votes)

In Vitro Fertilization procedure starts from ovulation induction and ends with embryo transfer and implantation. On an average, IVF timeline from start to finish takes 6 to 8 weeks for successful completion of IVF treatment. When the symptoms of implantation are seen, it determines positive pregnancy.

Let’s Discuss in More Detail About IVF Timeline:-

    1. How Long Does IVF Process Take?
    2. Week 1 - Ovulation Induction
    3. Week 2 to 4 - Egg Retrieval
    4. Week 5 - Fertilization
    5. Week 7 - Embryo Transfer and Implantation

Are you facing troubles in conceiving naturally and looking for an effective solution? Then, the IVF procedure is a top solution for this problem. It mainly involves successful fertilization of eggs and sperms in the lab, which leads to the formation of embryos. These embryos are then implanted into the uterus of the female partner. IVF procedure takes a certain time period from the start to finish. In this article, every step of the IVF procedure is explained in detail. You can utilize this information for an improved experience of IVF procedure. (1)

The entire period of a single IVF procedure takes around 6-8 weeks. This time period involves the first consultation until the transfer of the embryo into the uterus. You need to know that this time frame can vary from women to women depending upon the extent of treatment required by them. Your gynecologist or IVF specialist will monitor the IVF cycle at every step to ensure its success. This will help to know the progress of the IVF cycle and predict the success at every stage. (2)

    IVF Timeline

    Week 1

    First visits and consultations

A couple who is planning to conceive needs to be proactive regarding visiting a gynecologist or infertility specialist. Braving to go to the infertility specialist is the primary step for the success of IVF treatment. Booking an appointment with a gynecologist or infertility specialist takes courage. So, you need to ensure that you are opting for this step after making a firm decision. This is a crucial step where you will find some real answers to your infertility and baby-related queries.

    First consultation

This visit will provide you with information regarding the status of your reproductive health and reasons due to which you are unable to conceive naturally. It is recommended that you utilize this first consultation for asking your queries to the gynecologist. You should not shy away from asking genuine questions related to infertility and the process of conceiving a baby.

    First Consultation

    Next appointment with clinical co-coordinator

IVF treatment involves a series of steps including diagnosis as well as medical steps. In the next appointment, you will consult the clinical co-coordinator who will provide you a detailed diagnosis of your condition. The entire treatment plan is given to the patient. This helps in understanding the required steps and appointments. A key plan is made and explained to the couples.

Consulting for finances of IVF procedure

The cost of IVF procedure along with medications and injections can be a costly affair for several couples. Therefore, it is essential to discuss the total cost of the chosen IVF procedure along with the success rates. You need to know that prices of IVF procedure rise along with the success rates of IVF procedure. Couples can discuss with insurance companies whether IVF treatment is included in the policy or not. You can also utilize facilities like IVF financing.

    Week 2-4

    Preparation for IVF treatment begins

In the 2nd week of IVF treatment, the actual process of IVF begins. In this, couples undergo certain lab tests as prescribed to them.

Some of these vital tests include:

    Blood tests

These blood tests are done for reproductive hormones like FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (Luteinizing hormone), PRL (prolactin) and TSH (Thyroid-stimulating hormone).

    Blood test

Ultrasounds help in diagnosing certain types of already existing medical problems like submucous fibroids (a tumor-like condition in the uterine cavity) and intramural fibroids (in the wall of the uterine cavity).

    Evaluation of urine process

    • Urine tests of male partner are commonly done before commencing IVF procedure.
    • Infectious disease screening

    • Hazardous diseases like AIDS and other STD’s are checked thoroughly with the help of certain tests.

Sperm analysis tests for the male partner

A sperm analysis is a vital test, which is recommended to every couple who is about to start the IVF procedure. The semen of the male partner is tested in the laboratory. This provides the required information regarding sperm count, volume, morphology (shape, size, and appearance of sperm cells), semen pH, motility (movement), and agglutination of sperms (when sperm stick in a required manner i.e. head to head or tail to tail). (4) (3)

    Sperm Analysis tests

    Birth control precautions

Also, you need to keep in mind that before the IVF cycle begins, patients are asked to opt for oral contraceptives. The oral contraceptives (medications that prevent pregnancies) are given to the patients 10-14 days before starting IVF. This ensures that the woman’s cycles are regularized so that subsequent IVF steps can be planned in a timely manner. Contraceptive pills also reduce the growth of cysts. (5) (6)

    Pre ovarian stimulation Suppression

Lupron medications are given in the form of injections along with oral contraceptive pills to suppress the ovulation process. It leads to the formation of multiple mature eggs inside the ovaries. When the stimulation drugs are started, Lupron medications are reduced in quantity. In this way, the number of follicles will be available thus increasing the number of embryos available for the IVF procedure.

    Week 5

Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation (COH) is a crucial procedure, which occurs during this. The female partner’s ovaries and uterus are checked with the help of ultrasound.

    Consumption of fertility medications

In this step, fertility drugs like Clomid and injectable drugs like Follistim and Gonal-F are provided to the female partner. Clomid is an ovulation stimulatory drug. It helps in stimulating the ovaries of the woman undergoing IVF. Follistim contains follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in it. Gonal-F is also an injectable drug, which contains FSH in it. This boosts and stimulates the growth of multiple mature eggs, which finally result in a successful pregnancy. Fertility or stimulating drugs are given for around 8-12 days. (6)

    Monitoring visits

Here, the development of follicles and eggs are monitored with the help of blood tests and ultrasounds. The gynecologist or an IVF specialist keeps a firm check on the number and the size of the follicles and eggs in the patient. You need to visit the gynecologist for at least 5 times for monitoring sessions.

    Week 7

    Preparation for ovulation

Within 10-12 days after completion of medications and injections, the doctor plans for the triggering step, once the follicles and eggs grow to a decent size. Here, hCG (Human chorionic gonadotropin) is used to mature the eggs and to induce ovulation. (7)

    Egg retrieval step

This step takes place after 36-40 hours of injecting hCG injection or trigger shots. The doctor retrieves the quality and mature eggs. At the same time, semen specimen is also taken and sperms are separated from it. (8)

    egg retrieval step

Combination of egg and sperm in a lab

The eggs and sperms are combined in the lab, thus leading to the formation of embryos. If a good number of eggs are retrieved during the egg retrieval process, then the number of embryos formed will also be good in a number. In that case, 2-3 Embryos are transferred into the uterus and remaining are cryopreserved for future use. (9)

    Transfer of embryos

Embryos are transferred into the uterus of the female partner. Embryos are monitored and only the best embryos are transferred. At times, the embryo is transferred when it is in its Blastocyst stage (the stage after 5 days of fertilization). It is transferred with the help of a fine tube through the opening of the cervix into the interior of the uterus. Ultrasounds can be utilized to monitor the proper implantation of the embryos in a uterus. (10)

After this step, progesterone supplements are given to promote successful implantation of embryos in the uterus. Progesterone tablets are taken for 10-12 days. Then, pregnancy tests are carried out to find out successful pregnancy in the female partner. Generally, pregnancy tests are taken 2 weeks after ET (Embryo Transfer). If the test states positive, then your IVF cycle is successful.

Thus, within 6-8 weeks, the entire IVF procedure is completed. Do you want to know the factors, which lead to the success of the IVF procedure? Don’t miss to read IVF Success Factors. You can also visit OVO fertilityWoman Blog and find useful info on various infertility treatments.
