IVF ICSI - Know Facts and Difference between IVF and ICSI

    • 4.7   (6 Votes)

IVF ICSI is an assisted reproductive technology. The difference between IVF and ICSI depends on their process, treatment cost, time taken, and success rate. IVF ICSI procedure is used in cases of low sperm count and mobility, high antibody levels in semen, and past fertilization failure in IVF procedures.

Let’s Discuss in More Detail About ICSI IVF:

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), both are infertility treatments performed by the couples who want to have their own baby but are not capable of the same. There is an array of infertility treatment methods an individual or a couple can undergo to treat their infertility. However, ICSI and IVF are considered the best among ART treatments due to various reasons. This article takes you through various factors related to IVF and ICSI so that you have the advantage of making an inform decision when it comes to your own individual case. (1)

What is IVF and When Would It Be Recommended

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a process that is taken up for infertility or genetic problems. Couples who want to have a baby but are not able to conceive it naturally use this treatment. In this process, eggs and sperms are fertilized outside the human body in a laboratory. This leads to the formation of embryos. The formed embryos are then placed into the female partner and the process continues in the normal way inside the uterus. The doctor can suggest IVF in the following cases: (2)

    • Age over Forty (advancing age)
    • Blockage or Damage in the fallopian tubes
    • Ovulation disorders
    • Decided to use donor’s eggs
    • Unexplained Infertility
    • Uterine Fibroids
    • Advanced endometriosis
    • Fertility preservation for cancer and other health related issues

What is IVF ICSI and When it is Recommended?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an infertility treatment performed with conventional IVF. It is carried out in a laboratory where a single sperm is picked up with a fine glass needle and is injected directly into each egg. Experienced embryologists using specialist equipment perform it. In this technique, very few sperms are required and the ability of the sperm to penetrate the egg is no longer important, as it is assisted by the ICSI procedure. The infertility specialist in the following cases recommends ICSI: (3)

    • In case of low sperm count
    • Low mobility of sperm (sperm cannot move properly)
    • When sperm has been retrieved surgically from the epididymis (MESA/PESA) or the testes
    • In case of high levels of antibodies in the semen
    • When there has been a previous fertilization failure using conventional IVF treatment

    ivf vs icsi

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) vs. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Now, as we are aware of the process involved in IVF and ICSI, here are some of the major differences between ICSI and IVF:

    1. Process: ICSI is very similar to conventional IVF, as it is performed along with IVF. The method of achieving fertilization is the main difference between the two procedures. (4)

In IVF, eggs and sperm are mixed together in a laboratory in a dish as sperms fertilize the eggs naturally. For this purpose, large numbers of actively swimming normal sperms are required. For many couples, the number of suitable sperms available may be very limited. There may also be other factors preventing fertilization. Therefore, at that time, conventional IVF is not an option and ICSI comes as an alternative.

    2. Cost: The cost of ICSI in India ranges between Rs. 2, 30,800 to Rs. 2, 66,200 but that is along with IVF whereas, cost of IVF ranges between Rs 1,99,300 to Rs. 2,35,500. However, the cost of the treatment depends on many factors like clinic, location, ratings and success rate.

    3. Time: While four weeks is the typical amount of time spent in an IVF cycle, it only includes the time after all necessary testing is completed. The time spent on a pregnancy test does not count in four weeks. Pregnancy test adds another ten days to two weeks to the timeline.

It almost takes four to six weeks to complete ICSI first cycle along with IVF treatment but there is a wait for ovaries to respond to the medication and eggs to get matured.

    4. Success Rate: The success rate of IVF treatment decreases with the age. Women who are more than 35 years of age have 40.7 % success rate and it decreases to only 3.9 % for women who are more than 42 years old. Apart from this, the success rate also depends on other factors like reproductive history, the cause of infertility, and lifestyle factors.

    What is IVF ICSI

ICSI is used with conventional IVF to increase the success rate. The success rate of ICSI also depends on age. The younger the age, there are more chances of ICSI treatment to be successful. The success rate is 44 % if you age between 18 to 35 years. It goes on decreasing and be just 11 % if you between 43 to 45 years old.

    Facts About ICSI and IVF

In case of male infertility, there is no option but to choose ICSI with IVF cycle. Here are some of the misconceptions you need to know if you are going for ICSI or IVF treatment. (5)

    • There is a misconception that through IVF treatment you get twins or triplets. However, the majority of women who go through the IVF treatment have a single child.
    • According to research, only 21% of pregnancies through IVF ICSI results in twin pregnancies and one percent results in triplets. This happens due to the process of transferring multiple embryos to increase the chance of pregnancy.
    • There are certain clinics that prevent their patients from doing ICSI. As they believe that, it harms the egg since the sperm is mechanically introduced into the egg. However, this is not true, as long as the clinic has a skilled embryologist. (6)
    • There is no increase in the risk of birth defects post ICSI treatment and ICSI procedure does not cause any type of genetic problems.

    Reasons to Choose ICSI IVF

The success rate of IVF ICSI procedure is good there are a couple of distinct reasons for this:

    • In the case of men who do not have normal sperms, it can lead to total fertilization failure, making an IVF cycle to be unsuccessful. ICSI ensures that only good quality sperm is picked for fertilization. (7)
    • In case of IVF, despite the fact that the motility and sperm count is normal, sometimes the sperm cannot fertilize eggs and this is identified only during the course of IVF. At that time, the patient then has to start on a new IVF cycle with ICSI to ensure that fertilization occurs.
    • ICSI IVF is a safe and proven method to ensure that the egg is fertilized yet it does not include increased likelihood of conception. The process is safe and couples have seen effective results. (8)

There is not much difference in the cost of IVF and ICSI along with IVF. So, if required then choosing ICSI along with IVF will be a better choice.
