Precautions To Take Before and After IVF Procedure

As a precautionary measure before embryo transfer, one must take medicines on time, take healthy sleep and do a mock IVF test. Eating healthy, minimizing caffeine intake and avoiding stress can be very helpful after embryo transfer to make an IVF cycle successful.

In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an advanced and effective way to treat infertility. This ART procedure has helped many childless couples to solve their problem of infertility, which could have been due to any reason. In an IVF procedure, the eggs are fertilized outside the mother’s body and then implanted back into the woman’s uterus. IVF procedure is one of the most delicate procedures in the medical field especially in the field of gynecology; therefore, a woman should take certain precautions before and after the procedure.

In this article, we will look at:

IVF implantation success rate depends mostly on two factors: the receptiveness of the uterus and the quality of embryos. Most implantation failures occur due to abnormalities in the embryo. If a patient suffers from poor egg quality, the resulting embryos may not be healthy enough to implant. (1) While it is difficult to accept that implantation is out of your control, it is important to acknowledge that the actions you take can largely impact the quality of embryos. There are some precautions and steps you can take as you prepare your body before egg retrieval and after to give yourself the best possibility of success. Some safety precautions, which a woman should take before IVF are:

    1. What are the precautions to take before IVF?

    • Take Medicines on Time: Medications should be taken as prescribed by the doctor. Carefully managing estrogen and progesterone hormone supplementation before embryo transfer can help prepare and support the endometrial lining. This helps to create an ideal environment for implantation and early development of embryos. The fertility specialistmay also prescribe certain medications to prepare a body for the procedure. The doctor may also give a gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which will inhibit the surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) in body. (2) These medications should be taken timely without missing a dose. Do not panic if you miss a dose and consult your doctor if you are having side effects by the medicines given by the doctor.

    • Do Mild to Moderate Daily Exercise: Women who are in poor physical shape or overweight can have a lower chance of conceiving during an IVF cycle. (2) Doing light exercise like short distance walking or yoga can reduce any stress you may be experiencing as you prepare for IVF. Women should try to maintain weight and regulate blood circulation through exercise. Mild to moderate exercise has been known to help during IVF treatments. However, avoid strenuous activities like aerobics, jogging or running as this could lead to a decrease in live births and pregnancy loss during IVF treatment. (3)

    • Maintain a Healthy Sleep Cycle: To increase your chances of conceiving, take good nutrition and perform health practices four to six weeks prior to the first IVF cycle. (2) This includes maintaining a healthy sleep cycle, with at least eight hours of sleep a night. Sleep in complete darkness as it can improve production of natural melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that helps with healthy follicle development so if you improve natural levels of melatonin before IVF cycle, there is no requirement for melatonin supplements. (4)

    • Participate in a Mock IVF Cycle: About 4 weeks before the first IVF cycle, your doctor might conduct a mock embryo transfer to determine the depth of uterine cavity. The mock cycle involves successfully placing the embryos into the uterus. This will show that you and your partner/donor are responding well to the hormone therapies. (5) During the mock cycle, doctor will do an ultrasound 10-12 days into your estrogen-enhanced cycle. (2) You may also be given birth control pills to regulate cycle to synchronize ovulation at the time of embryo transfer. This mock IVF cycle will help the doctor determine the reproductive functions and figure out the technique that will be the most successful for placing the embryos in uterus

    • Consider Embryo Screening: Genetic testing of embryos before the transfer is a good way to make sure that the most viable embryos or blastocysts are chosen. Pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS) is a technique used to screen for a wide range of genetic mutations known as aneuploidy check, which can improve chances of implantation. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is also performed to screen for single-gene disorders, or for chromosomal translocations, where parts of chromosomes are rearranged. PGD is usually performed when a patient is concerned about specific diseases such as Tay Sachs, Cystic Fibrosis and other severe genetic disorders.

    2. What are the precautions to take after IVF?

The success of an IVF procedure is dependent on several factors including the diet and lifestyle of the women. Therefore, a woman needs to take care of several factors after IVF procedure, which is closely associated with the success of the pregnancy cases. It is essential that she adopt some precautions as advised by the concerned IVF specialist. This will prevent any kind of negative effects on the body of the woman as well as the health of the baby. Some safety precautions, which a woman should take after IVF, are:

    • Manage Stress: Being too concerned with implantation causes unnecessary stress at a time when you should be doing your best to relax. (1) Meditation is always an easy and effective way to keep your mind calm and balance your body. There are multiple types of meditation one can follow to get rid of the stress. It will help clear the negative thoughts and stress, which in return makes IVF, journey enjoyable. Many couples who have gone through the IVF process find it useful to join a support group for de-stressing activities. (2) Having the support of one's partner or close family member can also help to deal with the stress during treatment.

    • Take Omega 3 Fish Supplements and Folic Acid Supplements: Omega 3 fattyacids are known to improve embryo morphology after IVF treatment. Folic acid supplements are also taken by pregnant women to improve the health of the fetus. Taking this supplement can also help to prepare the body for pregnancy. (2) 400 mg of DHA and 800 mg of EPA daily is the recommended dose but be sure to pick a product that is approved by all medical standards or choose the same product as suggested by the doctor. (4)

    • Eat Healthy: You need to avoid all kinds of junk food after IVF treatment. It is strictly advised to maintain a balanced and nutritious diet routine and consume healthy foods. Include avocados, non-caffeinated green tea, nuts, green leafy vegetables and mono-saturated based fruits in daily diet. Make sure that you consume the required amount of dairy products like milk and yogurt to stay healthy during pregnancy. Eating leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, calcium as well as protein, is optimal for pregnancy. (6) Your concerned infertility specialist or nutritionist may also recommend foods that would be most beneficial after embryo transfer. Do not begin any restrictive diets, such as low-calorie or low-carbohydrate and do not skip your meals.

    • Limit Caffeine and Alcohol Intake: Restrict consumption of caffeine and avoid drinking alcohol or smoking like you were already pregnant. Excess consumption of caffeine is found to reduce the chances of pregnancy by almost 50 percent. (2) Choose for alternative healthy drinks like fruit juices or milkshakes rather than carbonated drinks. This will ensure that you have fair chances of successful pregnancy after the completion of IVF treatment. You should limit your caffeine intake and completely avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for positive results. (6)

    • Avoid Hot Baths, Stretching, and Weightlifting: If you have a habit to take a hot bath then, change your habit as this might cause implantation failure. Very cold water is also not recommended to take bath with so use water at moderate temperature. You should keep the body at normal temperature as much as possible. Activities like yoga can be done but do not stretch. Ask your doctor for yoga steps and exercises that you can do after IVF. It is advised to go for normal morning and evening walk and do some basic exercises. Lifting heavy objects should also be avoided as it can cause strain to the uterus. Apart from the above-mentioned precautions, it is advised to adopt a positive lifestyle and abstain from sexual intercourse for about one week after transfer. You can visit your doctor for a regular diagnosis to know about the development of the embryos transferred.

Follow these tips to improve the chances of successful implantation and pregnancy after IVF procedure. It is also very important to follow the doctor's advice in case of safety precautions. You will surely notice some improvements in your body after following these precautions that ultimately progress into a successful pregnancy.
